Are you the parent of a child with autism or a physical disability, to enable transport? To ask what the persons with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) states is the responsibility of the schools, transportation for your child? For example: your child with a physical disability is not allowed, on an excursion, because the class can not get the wheelchair bus. This would be a Section 504 complaint, because your child will be discriminated against on the basis of their disability. I have with this situation, and the school usually quickly resolve the transportation problem, if you tell them that you can use a section 504 complaint. Section 504 is supported by the Office of Civil Rights in Washington, but every state has at least one office.
3. If your child is an assistant in the class, then you can take a bus assistant, if your child's disability requires. The goal of the journey as a link is to secure access to education. So, if your child needs an assistant coach to secure in the school, school personnel are required to view it.
4. If your school is not required for the transport for your child, you can be reimbursed for the transport itself. Make sure your child IEP, states that they need transportation as a service and you will be reimbursed.
A district may also be required to reimburse the parents if:
A. Transportation is needed to provide FAPE and the district is not fulfilled his duty.
B. The district does not recognize the need for transportation.
C. The district is not responsible for the transport.
5. If your child's extra-curricular activity is related to their IEP goals, then transporting them. For example: If your child has autism and needs to work on social skills, they can gain that extra activities. In this case transport needs of the school.
6. Schools are not allowed to shorten your child's school day for the transport. Unfortunately, it happens all the time, and you must opt for the special training of personnel for the good of your child.
IDEA gives children with disabilities equal educational opportunities, which means that a full school day.
